The Essence of Coaching: Diving Deep Beyond the Surface - Spencer Uncensored Ep 65

Woo-hoo! Welcome back to another exhilarating episode of "Spencer Uncensored," where we're now on episode 65! It's been quite the journey, and I'm thrilled to have you all on board as we navigate the complexities of life, business, and growth together. It's April 2024, and as we cruise through this month, I'm reminded of the permanence of our digital footprints. Someone mentioned to me just the other day about a video I published years ago, and it hit me—our contributions truly do live on indefinitely.
I've been immersed in the coaching industry for nearly two decades, and it's a world I've come to know intimately. Tonight, I want to shed some light on the distinctions between coaching, consulting, and counseling. These terms often get tossed around interchangeably, but they signify very different approaches to personal and professional development.

Let's start with counseling. It's all about healing and repair, focusing on past traumas and issues to bring someone back to a state of balance. While immensely valuable, counseling delves into the why of past actions and behaviors, which is different from what coaching aims to achieve.

Coaching, on the other hand, propels you forward. It's about identifying where you are, where you want to be, and how to get there. Coaching isn't about digging up the past; it's about crafting the future. It's a directive approach that helps you move from average to exceptional. And yes, while we sometimes touch upon past issues, it's always with the goal of overcoming barriers to success.

Consulting fills another role altogether. It's prescriptive, offering specific advice and steps to achieve a particular outcome. While coaching can encompass elements of consulting, they serve different purposes. Consulting tells you what to do; coaching guides you in discovering how to do it for yourself.

Here's what coaching, specifically the way I approach it, aims to do:

  1. Focus: Helping you maintain clarity on what you want and why.
  2. Accountability: Not about shaming for inaction, but about understanding the steps taken and assessing their effectiveness.
  3. Consistency: Creating systems and habits that sustain progress and performance.
  4. Growth: Pushing beyond comfort zones to achieve and set new, ambitious goals.

Coaching is a journey—a partnership. It's about becoming the person capable of achieving the goals you set. It's about transformation, not just transaction. As we continue to explore the intricacies of coaching and its impact, I invite you to join me in this conversation. Whether you're considering coaching for the first time or are already on the path, remember, the journey is about growth, focus, and surpassing limits. Let's keep moving forward, crush our goals, and redefine what's possible.

Until next time, keep well and keep striving for greatness. Your journey is just beginning, and I'm here to guide you every step of the way. Let's make it happen!

50 Cent, Government Cheese, and the Science of the Qualified Champion

The "Gangster" Paradox: Why Autonomy is the Ultimate Un-Goal The word "gangster" carries a lot of baggage. For most, it conjures images of the street, the hustle, or the headlines. But in his recent Esquire sit-down, 50 Cent stripped away the theater and gave us a definition that belongs on every entrepreneur’s whiteboard: "To me, gangster means to live the way you like without answering to anyone." Read that again. He’s not talking about crime; he’s talking about agency . He’s talking about the " Un-Goal ." The "Should" Monster vs. The Un-Goal In my work with the WRAP Sheet and Momentum & Mastery , we talk constantly about the " Should Monsters ." These are the invisible anchors—the projects you took on because a competitor did, the clients you tolerate because you’re afraid of the gap in your calendar, and the "hustle" habits that steal your emotional capital. Most people spend their entire careers building ...

Economic Quake & Tsunami: Will Your Business Adapt, or Be Obliterated? (Momentum & Mastery)

Let's cut through the noise. The headlines are screaming: economic uncertainty, tech layoffs, tariffs, AI disruption. It's a volatile landscape, and the old rules are crumbling. And in my book, "Momentum & Mastery," I posed a question that's more relevant than ever: "The question isn’t whether things will change, the question is will your business?" Right now, that question isn't just academic. It's a matter of survival . You can't bury your head in the sand. The market isn't waiting for you to catch up. It's accelerating, and if you're not moving with it, you're getting left behind. We're seeing established giants falter because they failed to anticipate the tectonic shifts. They clung to outdated models, resisted innovation, and now they're paying the price. This isn't about tweaking your marketing strategy. This is about a fundamental shift in your business's DNA. AI is here: Are you integrating it, ...

The Unbeatable Edge

The headlines scream. The algorithms whisper. Inflation. Recession fears. AI is coming for your job. It’s easy to get lost in the noise. To feel like the ground beneath your business is constantly shifting. To think you need a new strategy every other week. Stop. Because while the world is busy chasing the next shiny object or panicking about the latest disruption, your real power lies not in reacting to their game, but in owning yours . The market doesn't pay for average. It certainly doesn't pay for replaceable. And here’s the stark truth: if a machine can do it, a machine will do it. Faster, cheaper, without coffee breaks. If your customer only cares about the lowest price, you're in a race to the bottom that you can't win. So, what’s left? You. Not your tasks. Not your basic services. But your human advantage. Your genuine creativity. The unique way you solve a problem. The empathy you bring to a frustrated client. The gut judgment that sees around corners. The ...
